Adam Smith Knew We’d Love Jane Austen

Are you a fan of Jane Austen? Ever wondered why her stories remain popular with generations of readers and movie-goers? Adam Smith, the economist and philosopher, helped me see Austen’s genius in a new light.

My daughter led me to this. She’d been studying Adam Smith in college. She told me about his insights into human behavior and motivation. The more we discussed Smith’s ideas, the more we saw truth in them–both in real life and in literature. We particularly saw Austen’s novels as examples of Smith’s influential “impartial spectator.” We sent our thoughts to, and they published them right away!

I recently realized I had never posted the resulting article on my own website, so here it is.

As always, I’d love to hear your reactions and comments. Happy reading!
